Occasionally a hockey fight will feature more than two players going at it on the ice with certain instances even seeing full squads duking it out. It’s time to check in with Cagereaders on their opinions on the latest in MMA news. We hear your thoughts on Quinton Jackson, which belts will change hands, and most importantly, Louis Gaudinot’s hair. Want your thoughts included in a future reader rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your timeline.

How do you solve a problem like “Rampage?” Some Cagereaders have ideas.

There are a lot of people that make the UFC money, but once you start losing, your marketability dwindles. Add in the general consensus that Quinton doesn’t care anymore and seemingly doesn’t want to evolve his game; you’ll see that this is not a benefit for anyone involved. Have him fight the final time on his contract and let him go. Throw him in against a mid-tier fighter on the undercard (like they did with Arlovski years ago) and move on. — Ryan Wahl

Although I used to be a huge fan of Rampage and am less so these days, reading Quinton’s words makes me consider if what he wants is the same thing I think certain other fighters want: Big fights with no title implications. I think there are a handfull of fighter who just want to hammer checks and generally not worry about rank or title. In other words fighters may be hunting for financial security for what they do and not a title shot where some of their limitations could be exposed. I say the UFC should have Quinton fight guys with great stand up, let him makes some money, put on some great stand up fights and everyone wins. Sometimes you just give the baby his bottle until he grows out of it. — Mark Jimerson

With nearly every UFC belt on the line this summer, will any change hands?

I love this current batch of champions. I think it’s good for the sport to have dominant champs. That being said, I think the one most likely to lose in his next fight is Benson Henderson, but I think that JDS has less of a gap on the field in his weight class (Mir is a mismatch.) But Ben Henderson became somewhat of a superhuman to me after his last fight when he told his corner man he could go another five rounds, and seemed perfectly able to do so. In a way, that was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen watching years of MMA. — John Wilcox

Cagereaders tuned into Invicta FC’s all-female card.

Shows there are a lot of different weight classes that are competitive. Not just the Strikeforce 135! Great show, lots of heart by the women warriors! — David Feinblatt

And onto the most important point of discussion: Should Louis Gaudinot cut his hair?

God yes. Every second that a fighter has to spend getting hair out of his eyes is a second in which he is losing the fight. — Bruce Garrison

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was arrested early Saturday morning for a DUI after getting into an accident in Broome County in New York state. The accident was first reported by TMZ who said Jones crashed his Bentley into a pole and was arrested at the scene. Ariel Helwani reports Jones walked away from the accident uninjured.

Malki Kawa, Jones’ manager, released a statement on the arrest.

“I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI. While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.”

Jones recently defended his championship with a five-round decision win over Rashad Evans. He is scheduled to fight Dan Henderson in September.

JonesJones_180_42.jpg

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones isn’t the only high level athlete in his family. His younger brother Chandler was just drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, and his older brother Arthur is already in the NFL, a defensive end for the Baltimore Ravens.

Arthur featured in the UFC’s Primetime series for the UFC 145 event, which saw the Champ take on former friend-turned-rival Rashad Evans in Atlanta. On Tuesday, the elder Jones decided to take in a UFC event not involving his brother, as he trekked to the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. for UFC on Fuel 3.

While there, he spoked with CSN Washington regarding his Champion brother and his upcoming bout with Dan Henderson.

“It’s a major match-up, you know, Hendo is a guy you can’t really sleep on, he’s old but he’s very explosive and he has knockout power so Jon just has to stick to the gameplan and everything’s going to be ok,” Arthur commented. “Youth and his ability to be creative [are in Jon's favor]. Jon is a hard guy to study for a fight and I think just his mindset and how he moves is going to be tough for him [Hendo].”

One other fight on his mind is one between Jones and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. While Jon has stated in the past that it’s not a fight he’s likely to want, Arthur says it’s one he’d enjoy seeing.

“They’re great friends and they have mutual respect,” Arthur said, while saying the fight wouldn’t actually happen. “I know Jon doesn’t want to hurt their friendship, you know, like how he did with Rashad [Evans], so, you know, I don’t think it will ever happen.”

“I wouldn’t mind seeing it though.”

Penick’s Analysis: This Jones family is a very talented bunch. Jon’s the highest profile member at the moment as the reigning UFC Champ, but Arthur and Chandler in the NFL is a big deal as well. Not too many families can claim multiple professional athletes at their respective levels. Arthur’s training in the offseason now consists of working with his younger brother in MMA training, and he’s clearly a fan of the sport in general as well.

“The Ultimate Fighter” season nine winner James Wilks announced his retirement from MMA after doctors advised him he could become paralyzed if he continued to fight.

Wilks had a serious knee injury that kept him out of the Octagon. His last bout was a loss to Claude Patrick in October of 2010. When that healed, a neck injury from his rugby-playing days flared up and Wilks realized how serious previous warning signs were.

“I had problems in a couple of the fights that I didn’t really talk about,” he said. “In one of the fights, I got hit, and the whole left side of my body went numb, all the way down to the toes.”

Even with the doctors’ warnings, Wilks called the decision difficult, particularly because he went out on a loss. He went 1-2 in the UFC after beating DaMarques Johnson in the TUF finale. As more fighters age, they will be faced with the issue of retirement. Kudos to Wilks for being strong enough to walk away before he was damaged permanently.

Alan Belcher recently survived one of Rousimar Palhares’ leg locks and went on to win by TKO at UFC on Fox 3. To give you an idea how rare that is, half of Palhares’ 14 wins have come via a leg submission. Generally, when “Toquinho” gets a hold of a leg, the only way to get out is by tapping.

But Belcher solved his the Palhares puzzle and wants to help you (yes, you!) do it, too. After being approached by several people for tips, the jiu-jitsu black belt is going to teach how he gameplanned for Palhares, and how he executed it while in the fight.

On Thurs., May 24, at 8:30 E.T., Belcher will hold a free webinar complete with drills, defenses, and conditioning moves. If you want to learn from Belcher, sign up here. Seminars with fighters of Belcher’s caliber will often cost you hundreds, so anyone training should take part.

Athletes will often guard their game plans like nuclear missile launch codes. It says a ton about both Belcher’s character and his confidence in his game that he’ll share his secrets to anyone who asks.

Thanks, Fightlinker.

At the 13th annual ‘A Day in the Dirt’ I got a chance to talk with Sayaka “Teriyaki Sauce” Kaneshiro, WMX Pro #15

How was your racing today?

It was good, I thought we had a practice first, I went out and it was actually a race. I was just racing and riding around, I felt like … WOW!

What did you think of the event overall?

It was to difficult racing for me, because I didn’t ride my pace. I rode about 6th place, less than I wanted to. I got the same number as last year, I just tried to do my best.

T.J. Grant put on an MMA clinic against Carlo Prater at UFC on Fuel 3 on Tuesday night, controlling every aspect of the fight through 15 minutes to earn a unanimous decision.

Grant was comfortable striking with Prater throughout, but he shined against the Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt on the ground, scoring takedowns, passing, and attacking for submissions. He nearly finished the fight at the horn as he snatched a late armbar, but Prater was saved by the end of the fight.

Grant has now won two straight in the lightweight division, and looks very impressive in that weight class. Prater technically is 1-1 now in his UFC run after a DQ win in his debut in January.

Chan_Sung_Jung_180.jpg

Chan Sung Jung’s night just keeps getting better. After an incredible win over Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel 3 Tuesday night, “The Korean Zombie” was awarded with two “Fight Night” bonus checks for the fight, and now he’s got something even bigger to look forward to: a title fight.

That’s the word from UFC President Dana White, who texted Fuel TV’s Ariel Helwani to pass along the news that Jung has leapfrogged Hatsu Hioki in the UFC Featherweight Title picture, and will take on the winner of UFC 149′s Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch bout later this year.

Hioki had the spot firmed up, but the combination of him turning down a title fight at UFC 149 and Jung’s spectacular fight with Poirier puts him further down on the ladder. Jung will enter the title fight later this year on the strength of three highly impressive wins.

First up was his victory over Leonard Garcia in a rematch of their crazy brawl in the WEC in 2010. In that rematch early last year, Jung pulled off the very first twister submission in UFC history. When he returned to action last December, he added another incredible highlight when he knocked out Mark Hominick – who had just went five rounds with Aldo earlier that year – in under seven seconds.

But Tuesday’s win may have been his best. Against a well rounded and highly skilled young opponent in the 23-year-old Poirier, Jung showcased a superior grappling game, an unpredictable striking attack, and a very adept submission game. After a fantastic start through three rounds, Jung then landed a flying knee to drop Poirier, which opened him up for a D’Arce choke, which he used to choke Poirier unconscious.

Now he’ll get his opportunity to either unseat Aldo, or take the title away from a newly crowned Koch. Either way, that shot is now in view.

Penick’s Analysis: That’s absolutely the right move for the UFC. There’s only a couple of months between the fights, so it gives Jung a good six to seven months of preparation for his first ever title fight. Given how much improvement he’s continued to show from fight to fight in the UFC, that can only be a good thing. Add in three incredible performances in a row, a rabid and rapidly growing fanbase, and it’s right for the UFC to put him into a title fight as quickly as possible. He was awesome on Tuesday night, and regardless of what he does or doesn’t have to offer Champ Jose Aldo or current challenger Erik Koch, he’ll be an immensely exciting challenger.

NelsonRoy_150_4.jpg

With several high profile cases of testosterone use in the sport of mixed martial arts, reform of the drug testing process in the sport has been called for on many fronts. To this point, the UFC has held to the maxim that it’s not an issue, and that this is “the most tested sport” in the world. But even if they don’t want to embrace any new processes, it doesn’t mean all of their fighters will follow suit.

Heavyweight Roy Nelson, who is competing at UFC 146 later this month in a bout against Dave “PeeWee” Herman, isn’t happy with the rash of PED users in the sport, and is looking at some out of pocket options for his future fights where drug testing is concerned.

“I think in our business I guess it pays to cheat,” Nelson said in an interview with VigilanteMMA. “From who I know and everybody who follows it, um yeah… it pays to cheat. I was talking to a couple people and a lot of us – at least myself – I go to VADA (Voluntary Anti Doping Association) and start doing that voluntarily; and then my opponents are going to have to do the same to even out the playing field. I think Floyd Mayweather said it best, ‘if you want to be the best, you must test.’”

Nelson isn’t using it to single anyone out in general, but says it’s something that all fighters should go ahead with if they’re truly clean athletes.

“I don’t think it’s about calling people out,” Nelson said. “It’s actually just putting your money where your mouth is. Whoever I fight probably after this next fight, I think I’ll just set it up and if I have to pay out of my own pocket to make it happen. I’ll do the gesture that the UFC won’t.”

Penick’s Analysis: This is a position that’s surely not going to sit well with everyone in the UFC, and with him laying it out as “I’ll do the gesture the UFC won’t,” he’s definitely sending a message. How that message is received remains to be seen, but it’s an admirable stance he’s taking. VADA is a voluntary program, but if more fighters begin taking part in it that’s the type of thing that could potentially lead to a shift in the UFC’s mindset on this front. Regardless, Nelson is making a very solid statement here, and we’ll have to see if he follows through on that going forward.

The MMA world continued to turn as you were off celebrating Mother’s Day, so here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know from the weekend.

As you can see from the video highlights, at Bellator Daniel Straus took the featherweight tournament final in a unanimous decision over Marlon Sandro. With that win, Straus will get to vie for the Bellator featherweight belt, which is currently held by Pat Curran. Patricky Freire will fight for it next.

Bellator was also marred by controversy as Waachiim Spiritwolf was winning his bout with Marius Zaromskis. However, Spiritwolf sustained a cut too severe to go on. For if the stoppage was justified, let’s turn to veteran MMA journalist Jim Genia:

Tough break for Waachim Spiritwolf on that cut-stoppage, as he was wrecking Marius Zaromskis.  However, in no way, shape or form do I question that stoppage.  Dr. Sherry Wulkan was the one who waved the bout off, and she’s been a ringside physician for more MMA bouts than 99.9% of the world has even read about on the Internet.

Marcin Held won with a quick heel hook, and Marcus Galvao took a decision to earn a spot in the bantamweight tournament finals.

Quarterfinals were underway at set of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Before the bouts, Dana White broke the news about Dominick Cruz’s torn ACL to both teams before confirming that Cruz will stay on to coach for the rest of the season.

In the first quarterfinal, James Vick pressured Joe Proctor and avoided his submissions to take the two-round decision. Michael Chiesa moved on to the semifinals by scoring a TKO over Justin Lawrence in the third round. Lawrence was considered the favorite coming into the show, so Chiesa’s win was an upset.

This Friday, Team Cruz’s Vinc Pichel will fight Team Faber’s Chris Saunders and a bout between teammates, as Team Faber’s Al Iaquinta faces Andy Ogle.

WhiteDana_WK150_58.jpg

UFC President Dana White missed Tuesday’s UFC on Fuel 3 event in Fairfax, Va., marking the first time since Zuffa purchased the UFC 11 years ago that he’s missed an event. He head a good reason, however, as he revealed on Twitter that he’ll be undergoing surgery this Wednesday in Los Angeles to treat Meniere’s disease.

White was recently diagnosed with the disease, which is a condition where fluid in the inner ear gets too high, affecting balance and hearing. In an interview with Kevin Iole at Yahoo! Sports, White revealed that his symptoms began months ago.

“I was on vacation in Fiji and it really started,” White said. “Then, you remember that press conference [after UFC 141] where I was holding the podium? I was feeling terrible and things were spinning around.”

He said things got bad on Tuesday when he was meeting with Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas, and he ended up needing to be taken out of the casino in a wheelchair. The surgery will keep him off his feet for about a week, and brings with it a risk of hearing loss. He’s hopeful for the best, and though he said it “totally sucks” having to miss fights, it was unavoidable.

“You know me and you know how I love to be at the fights, but I can’t,” White said. “If it were possible for me in any way, I’d be there. But I can’t. I’m having fun [Tweeting] with the fans and watching on TV.”

Penick’s Analysis: I wish nothing but the best for White in this surgery and hope he has a speedy recovery. For any criticisms that are laid upon the man, he is one of the hardest working people in the sports world, and he runs himself ragged with his travel schedule. I’m sure that in some way may have contributed to this disease manifesting; I’m by no means a medical expert, but an inner ear issue and his frequent flyer status may certainly be connected. Still, hopefully everything goes well with this surgery, and we’ll see him back in good health next week for UFC 146.

This year’s AMA Motocross Banquet & Season Celebration was held in a magnificent banquet room at the Pala Resort & Casino. The room was decorated beautifully, lined with motocross décor, as well as a stage decorated with the championship bikes and awards. The line-up of food, appetizers, desserts, and beverages was very elegant and delicious.

After dinner, the awards ceremony began. Jason Weigandt, along with Tim Cotter hosted the show. And of course Jason started it just like he does many of his shows – after slamming down an energy drink.

Jason went on to talk about each round of this summer’s AMA Motocross Nationals, with a list of funny jokes pertaining to all the good and bad situations at each of the races. After that, the awards and trophies were handed out.

The night was filled with special memories, good times, and laughs. One poignant moment was when Kevin Windham accepted the award for ‘Sportsperson of the Year’. Kevin always has a great way of expressing himself, but made a great comment towards his friend & the team manager, Mike LaRocco. He commented on Mike’s motivation, that pushed Kevin to work hard and do his best … it was touching, but at the same time very funny.
